Dear Councillor Hamdache,
I am writing to you regarding the ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion that was passed at Green Party conference.
At July’s Full Council meeting, our two groups came together to pass a motion on civility in public life that committed us all to fighting back against divisive politics. As a borough of sanctuary, it is our firm duty to show solidarity and support for affected communities in the face of rising discrimination, especially antisemitism and islamophobia.
Unfortunately, the decision by your party to pass this motion at conference has led the communities we serve to believe that the Islington Greens are not committed to building bridges.
I have spoken to residents that say they are not comfortable having representatives of a party that has endorsed these beliefs, and that their anxiety has been further increased by the silence from the Islington Green group following the motion passing.
That is why I am calling on you now to publicly confirm whether you or any other Islington Green Party Councillor voted for, or endorse, this motion.
This is a clear example of divisive politics, with many leaders across Jewish communities and even within the Green party highlighting the damage and division it will cause. Allowing the motion to pass is a clear and direct failure by the Green party to protect its Jewish members and to show solidarity with affected communities, rather than inflame tensions.
I believe, and always have believed, that you are a dedicated and compassionate champion of your community. That is why I ask you to stand up for the values that make our borough great.
Sincerely,
Una O'Halloran
Leader of Islington Council
