Zionism Is Not Racism

As reported, with every source

The people behind the motion

Its author, the party office-holders and councillors who put their names to it, and the endorsers its booklet names: what the press has reported about each, where it comes from, and what they said in reply.

Every item below is a paraphrase of the reports linked with it, and says whose report it is. An allegation is the outlet's, and unproven unless it says otherwise; each person's response is given where one was reported. Only people with a public office, a party post or a public profile are here, and only where their name on the motion's printed lists is a sure or probable match. As of 14 October 2026. If anything here is wrong, tell us and we will correct it.

The author of the motion

Lubna Speitan

Author of the motion; on the steering group of Greens for Palestine. The party says she holds no position beyond membership. Proposer of both versions

What has been reported

  • US court filings describe her as a close friend of Minh Quang Pham, jailed in the US for supporting al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. In 2016 she wrote to the judge asking for the case to be dismissed, and in October 2026 she told The Telegraph they are still friends (The Jewish Chronicle, ITV News).
  • The Jewish Chronicle also reports that she was filmed saying Zionists should be hunted like Nazi oppressors.

Their response: The Jewish Chronicle says there is no suggestion she knew of his activity. She calls the claims defamatory and decontextualised. The Jewish Chronicle reports that the party is investigating.

Sitting councillors who signed it

Cllr Kamel Hawwash

Birmingham cabinet member for children and families and deputy leader of the city's Green group; councillor for Stirchley; a former chair of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Spring 2026 list (A105)

What has been reported

  • The Jewish Chronicle says that in a television interview in October 2023 he appeared to suggest that captives, mostly soldiers, could be kept to negotiate with (the translation is the paper's).

Their response: He says he condemns attacks on civilians and calls the claims prejudiced.

The Daily Mail deleted a report that he had praised Hamas, which rested on the title of a Lebanese news segment of 17 October 2023 that he appeared in ("10 days since Al-Aqsa Flood: Courage in the face of aggression"), and published a clarification: "the title wording was the broadcaster's, not his", and "he unequivocally condemns all attacks on civilians" (Novara Media). A Labour dossier reported in May had described a video of his under the same "Al-Aqsa Flood" name; in the light of that clarification, it is not repeated here.

What has been reported

Cllr Rebecca Jones

Lewisham councillor for Blackheath, and a GP. Autumn 2026 list (E02), the version that passed

What has been reported

  • Jewish News reports a post calling for Zionism to be burned to the ground; that she described a reading of Yahya Sinwar's purported will as beautiful; that she used the term "Zios", popularised by David Duke; and that she supported Palestine Action.

Their response: The General Medical Council opened a fitness-to-practise investigation after UK Lawyers for Israel raised concerns; it is open. She says some of the content attributed to her is not hers, and that the GMC is being used to silence doctors who criticise Israel.

Rebecca Jones is a common name, but she is the only Green candidate of that name on record, so the match to the printed list is probably right.
