Everything wrong with Greens for Palestine
Greens for Palestine wrote the Green Party's "Zionism is Racism" motion and campaigned for it with a 48-page booklet and a run of statements on their website. Here is everything wrong with it, in one list: 20 charges, each in their own words, each with the answer and where it comes from.
Criticising Israeli governments, the occupation of the West Bank or the conduct of the war in Gaza is not antisemitism, and nothing on this page says it is. What follows is about what the motion's authors say about Zionism, about Jews and about violence.
They define Zionism as its opponents do, not as Jews do
Zionism, as they define it
“Zionism is a political ideology which called for the creation – and, now it exists, the continuity – of an ethnonationalist Jewish State in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/or domination of the non-Jewish population.”
This is a definition written by Zionism's opponents, not one any Zionist would recognise. The movement's founding text, the Basel Programme of 1897, says: "Zionism seeks to establish a home for the Jewish people in Palestine secured under public law." Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948 promised "complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex."
What Jews say Zionism means is, they say, "irrelevant"
Zionism, as they define it
“Whether some Zionists might believe their ideology does not call for the ‘ongoing dehumanisation, displacement, dispossession, disenfranchisement and destruction of Palestinians’ is irrelevant”
On the same page the booklet complains that others "deny the Palestinians the right to define their own oppression". Palestinians may define their own experience, it says, but what Jews say Zionism means to them is "irrelevant".
The idea that Jews may call Israel home is, they say, racist, even "subconsciously"
Zionism, as they define it
“Just the basic idea that historical Palestine is "a place [that Jews from Europe, North America and elsewhere can] call home", as soon as it is given any intent to implement in practice, is a racist idea … Racism can of course be subconscious as well as intentional. But, no matter how painful this realisation may be, it is still racism.”
Here the mask slips. Not a policy, not a government, not a settlement: the basic idea that Jews may call the Land of Israel home is, they say, racist, even when the person holding it does not know it.
Zionist "statements" are to be treated as racism under the party's code of conduct
"Not about Jews": what it means for Jewish members
“Treating Zionist expression as a form of racism within the Party's Code of Conduct is consistent with how the Party would treat the advocacy of any other ideology based on racial supremacy or colonial practice. It applies to actions and statements.”
The booklet tells members that respectful disagreement with the motion "should not be a problem" (page 23). Their own statement says the opposite: Zionist "statements" are to be dealt with as racism under the code of conduct, and "Disciplining the advocacy of a political ideology that mandates ethnic supremacy is a core function of any anti-racist organisation." The motion itself orders that Zionism "will be treated as any other form of racism" (page 31).
They coach members on complaints, and Caroline Lucas was a target within days
"Not about Jews": what it means for Jewish members
“To submit a complaint, CC: … and Greens for Palestine”
Their website tells members to copy Greens for Palestine into every complaint they make to the party. On 12 October 2026 The Telegraph reported that members of the group had shared advice on submitting complaints to the party's disciplinary panel about Caroline Lucas, the party's first MP and a former leader, who has criticised the motion and its author, and that a template letter of complaint had been created.

"All of Israel is a settlement"
"Settler colony"
“All of Israel is a settlement. It is a settler colony.”
Jews are a people of the Land of Israel: their language, their religion and their history come from it, and Jews lived there through every empire that ruled it, in Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed and Tiberias. Jews have been the largest community in Jerusalem since the nineteenth century.
They say Zionism treats Jews as a "race"
"Settler colony"
“the late 19th century Zionist movement embraced this view of persons of Jewish faith as a distinct ‘race,’ enshrining it in the charters of Zionist institutions, including those of the World Zionist Organization (WZO) in 1897”
The 1897 programme speaks of "the Jewish people", not a race. Anyone can become Jewish by conversion, and Israel's Law of Return applies to converts too. Israel's Jews came from Ethiopia, India, Yemen, Iraq, Morocco, Russia and everywhere between.
Their case rests on one advocacy report; no historian is cited in 48 pages
"Settler colony"
“Al Haq: Israeli Apartheid: Tool of Zionist Settler Colonialism”
The booklet's whole case for calling Zionism "settler colonial" and racist rests on one report by a Palestinian advocacy organisation, quoted at length. Its further reading has four items: that report, a 1981 UN study of self-determination, the boycott movement's founding call and an opinion piece in a magazine.
Jews may stay "as long as" they submit to a process "led by and for Palestinians"
"Equal rights for all", on conditions for one people
“And could Jews already living there be part of that state, as long as they’re able to commit to a justice and reparations process led by and for Palestinians? … Yes! This is and has always been the case.”
Equal citizenship does not come with a condition attached for one religious or ethnic group. Here it does: Jews may stay "as long as" they submit to a process run "by and for" others.
"Jews are not a nation"; those who object should "find another state"
"Equal rights for all", on conditions for one people
“Jews are not a nation … Those who will reject such a legal basis for citizenship, will have to find another state which welcomes self-declared racists as citizens. … The future state of Palestine … will have the right to prosecute all those who have partaken in the Apartheid and genocide which Israel has inflicted on the Palestinians.”
Their own answer to "what happens to Israel's Jews" is in their own words: those who object leave, and those who "partook" are prosecuted, in a country where military service is compulsory for most Jewish citizens.

"The monstrous State" is to be brought to an end, "from the river to the sea"
"Equal rights for all", on conditions for one people
“We must bring an end to this racism and the monstrous State that has been built upon it. … Free Palestine, from the river to the sea!”
The motion's answer is "a single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital" (page 30). Their home page promises "Freedom and Full Equality for all from the River to the Sea". The foreword, by the motion's lead author, calls Israel "the monstrous State" to be brought to an end.
They rewrite the 1947 vote
History, rewritten
“This was the situation in 1947, when the Arab States, the Palestinians and the Latin American States put forward a UN Resolution asking exactly that and opposing the partition of Palestine. It was the Zionist movement who opposed this and still do.”
On 29 November 1947 the UN General Assembly voted to partition Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state, by 33 votes to 13. Latin America did not stand with the Arab states: thirteen Latin American countries voted for partition, and only one, Cuba, against.
They say antisemitism "traces its origins to Europe"
History, rewritten
“weaponises Jewish historical trauma – which traces its origins to Europe – against us”
Antisemitism is not only European. In 1929, 67 Jews were murdered in Hebron, in Palestine itself. In 1941 about 180 Jews were murdered in the Farhud in Baghdad. After 1948 some 850,000 Jews left or were driven out of Arab countries, most of them to Israel, where their children and grandchildren now live.
Anyone backing two states is "ignorant" or in "bad faith": the UK, the UN and the PLO included
History, rewritten
“those who are still touting the so-called ‘two State solution’ either disqualify themselves by their ignorance or their bad-faith. … No one credibly accepted the ‘solution’ of two States in South Africa, nor two States in the north of Ireland, nor two States in Algeria.”
Ireland has had two states on one island since 1921, and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, approved in referendums North and South, rests on the principle that Northern Ireland's status changes only with the consent of its people.
They call armed struggle lawful, and never once mention Hamas, 7 October or the hostages
Violence, and what they leave out
“numerous UN General Assembly resolutions recognise the legitimacy of struggling by all available means, including armed struggle … their resort to the use of force – in accordance with the norms set by international humanitarian law – is lawful, and the motion simply recognises that fact.”
General Assembly resolutions are recommendations, not binding law. No rule of international law permits deliberately attacking civilians or taking hostages: the Geneva Conventions forbid both, whoever does it and whatever their cause.
A man convicted of five murders is, they say, a "prisoner of conscience"
Violence, and what they leave out
“The Green Party calls for the release of all Palestinian prisoners of conscience (including Marwan Barghouti)”
In 2004 a Tel Aviv court convicted Marwan Barghouti of five murders, for his part in attacks during the Second Intifada, and sentenced him to five life terms. Amnesty International keeps the term "prisoner of conscience" for people imprisoned for who they are or what they believe who have not used or advocated violence.
They compare Zionism to the Nazis, invoking the Warsaw Ghetto to do it
Language that crosses the line
“Would some of the brave Jews who rebelled against their oppressors in the Warsaw Ghetto be able to distinguish between different strands of Naziism?”
They compare Zionism, the national movement of the Jewish people, to the Nazis who murdered six million Jews, invoking the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto to do it. Elsewhere they call Gaza "an open-air concentration camp".

Zionists "scheming" to bring global conflict: one of the oldest antisemitic ideas there is
Language that crosses the line
“the Zionists in Israel risk a civilisational clash and global conflict with their reckless and destructive scheming”
Jews "scheming" to bring about world conflict is one of the oldest antisemitic ideas there is. The same authors write "what does the liberation of Palestine have to do with antisemitism? The answer is nothing", and that "Only racists, genocidaires and supporters of apartheid can argue (and kill) for the continuation of Zionism": a description, on their own figures, of most of the Jews of Britain and of Israel.
Their endorsers include Neturei Karta and Sami Al-Arian, and the booklet closes with "Zionism must be isolated and rooted out"
The company it keeps
“Zionism must be isolated and rooted out.”
That is the closing quotation of the booklet, from one of its endorsers. Its list of supporters includes Neturei Karta, the fringe ultra-Orthodox sect whose members attended Iran's conference questioning the Holocaust in Tehran in 2006, and Sami Al-Arian, who in 2006 pleaded guilty in a US federal court to conspiring to provide services to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a group proscribed in the UK, and was deported in 2015.
"A clear, unambiguous majority of the membership": 1,022 votes, under one per cent of members
The company it keeps
“This is a clear, unambiguous majority of the party membership speaking with one voice.”
The Telegraph reports that the motion passed at conference by 1,022 votes to 813, the backing of less than one per cent of a membership of around 230,000. Four of the party's five MPs have spoken out against it.

Taken together
In 1975 the United Nations General Assembly declared that "Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination". In 1991 it revoked that, by 111 votes to 25. The authors of the motion have brought back the line the world withdrew, and their own words show what it means in practice: Jews told what their identity really is, told their home is racist, and told on what terms they may stay.
Zionism is not racism. Green councillors can say so by signing the pledge; councillors and MPs of every other party, by adding their name.
